Bitdefender is among the top antivirus scanners for Mac with consistently high malware detection rates and many other beneficial security features. However, the program isn’t without shortcomings.
The default interface of the suite is simple to navigate, and it has features into three categories: Security privacy, Utilities, and Protection. The Protection tab is mainly devoted to the kinds of features you’d expect from any antivirus software, such as real-time scanning, firewall monitoring and countermeasures against ransomware. The Privacy tab offers suggestions on how to stay safe on the internet, such as a secure browser for the web that runs websites inside an sandbox to prevent malware from infecting your standard browser. The Utilities tab includes optimization tools and an application that shreds files with a unique algorithm and renders them unrecoverable if they are deleted.
Premium plans also include password management, as well as an option known as “Anti-Tracker” that will stop websites from tracking you inordinately. The program also offers a vulnerability scan that can detect outdated apps, weak passwords, and Windows updates that haven’t yet been applied. It also provides a quick customized scan that takes five minutes to complete, which is quicker than rivals like Norton and TotalAV.
The only downside of the app is that it takes quite a long time to download and can be frustrating for users who want to start. In addition, the application’s “Reveal in Finder” option doesn’t work it seems like a strange omission for an antivirus app that competes with other products that can accomplish the same thing with just few clicks.
